In the new blockbuster smash “The Omen” an interesting paralell was drawn. It opened with a priest at the Vatican Observatory in Rome taking notice of a strange commet. He immediately poured over books and made note of its visit earlier in history. The screen was soon filled with the contorted faces of peasants in the high middle ages, strange likenesses of demons, and other sinister creatures; leaving one with the impression that whatever the comet might be, its intents are obviously less that positive. The priest hurries to his cardinal and utters something in italian (which i don’t speak so I don’t have a translation). The next scene resembles a meeting of cardinals of some kind, and the priest presenting to them. His preesentation draws parallels from the book of Revelation and current events. The disasters that are depticted in revelation after each angel opens a scroll have modern twins. A great star falling out of the sky is the space shuttle Columbia; hurricane katrina, and 9/11 disaster, and so on- apparently predicted by the book of Revelation. You get the picture, see the film if you don’t follow.
my issue is this: how in the hell do you draw modern paralells to the book of revelation and declare that the end of the world is upon us because the is some strange comet? Take it from a different angle. The director releases the film on 6/6/06; which only happens once every 1000 years. The director remakes the original film starring gregory peck, with the exception of the added section with the priests and the paralells in the beginning. The entire movie flows on without the need of the beginning of the film….. why include the beggining of the film? The movie ends with the so named “son of satan” staring at you with his nasty eyes holding the president’s hand……all the film needs. The point is well taken-the devil is on earth! Watch out for falling signs and stakes from Cathedrals and your occasional lightening storm; you might also want to make right with the so called “guy in the sky”. I am simply wondering why the director included that beginning snipet of the film? What was he trying to say? Predicting the end of the world using the book of revelation? makes no sense to me at all. Why use the church when you’re making a movie about satan- that doesn’t even fulfill what the book of revelation says. Satan gets his ass kicked remember? I wonder about hollywood these days. I wonder more about the american public that still holds to this pie in the sky notion of belief and faith- and trust in authority. Blatant rationalization combined with the inability to cope with realitty. You can see it in this film. Disasters occur, there is a new comet, things cannot be explained- so people invent some sort of explanation for their occurance with teh invention of some type of deity, or paralell with some sort of prophecy. Makes no sense to me. So i wonder- what was this director trying to say when he added that extra few minutes onto that film? Is the world ending? Is it falling to pieces around us because New Orleans couldn’t repair their levvy systems, and properly evacuate people and now suddenly “God” is angry? Is it coming to an end because there were mechanical failures on a space shuttle that crashed down to earth? is the world ending because some ancient text says so? A text so inspired by a dream? I don’t know about you, but in my world- you need better sources than that.
